Shiro Masuyama is a socially engaged artist whose work ranges from performances to sculpture, installations, photography, and video. His work has been shaped by over 35 residencies worldwide, such as the ISCP – International Studio & Curatorial Program, New York (2002-2003); Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin (2004-2005); the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Korea (2008); and Stiftung Künstlerdorf Schöppingen, Germany (2023). Following residencies at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin (2006) and Flax Art Studios in Belfast (2009), he relocated to Belfast, where he has lived ever since. As a Japanese artist who has made Northern Ireland his home, he is in a unique position to question how identity can be influenced by the dominant political forces surrounding us. In the Bere Island Arts Festival, he will represent the Borderline Project, a half-Irish and half-British caravan that he has developed over the past 13 years after being commissioned by Derry~Londonderry City of Culture in 2013. The project utilises his neutral perspective as an ethnic minority resident of Northern Ireland. Masuyama has participated in notable biennials and triennials, including ‘BIENALSUR 2021’ at the MACRO Museum of Contemporary Art in Rosario, Argentina, and the ‘Aichi Triennale 2013’ in Nagoya, Japan.
