Bere Island Arts Festival will be running an art competition for the children of Scoil Mhichíl Naofa. The children are asked to present work on what the island means to them through art and written word.

Molly Twomey grew up in Lismore, County Waterford, and graduated in 2019 with an MA in Creative Writing from University College Cork. Her work has appeared in New England Review, Poetry Review, Poetry Ireland Review, Banshee, The Irish Times, Mslexia, The Stinging Fly and elsewhere.

An exhibition by visual artist Mary Sullivan in collaboration with Bere Island Women Create.

Through the lens of quilt making, performance, written word, sound, and photography, the Bere Island women reflect on the hold that the island has over them.

Take a guided tour of Lonehort Battery, which was operational during World War One. It is the largest of seven gun batteries built on Bere Island by the British Admiralty. The battery is surrounded by a deep moat and still contains two 6″ coastal artillery guns.

Sarah Walker is a visual artist living and working on the Beara Peninsula, West Cork. She grew up in Dublin and studied Fine Art Painting at the National College of Art and Design. In 1991 she moved to live permanently in Beara and opened the Sarah Walker Gallery in 2000.

Four Bere Island Artists come together to showcase their work. This exhibition will feature a variety of artwork inspired by Bere Island and its surroundings, including drawings, photographic images, sculptures, and quilting.

Location: Lecture Theatre (Former Camp Church)

A pinhole workshop for Transition Year students of Scoil Phobail Bhéara to explore the making of pinhole cameras, creating negative images and then producing a positive black and white photographic print. Some cameras will be available as well as the opportunity and details for participants to make their own cameras.

This workshop is for transition year students of Scoil Phobail Bhéara. There is a workshop on Saturday open to the public.

Location: Wild Atlantic Glamping 

In this three-hour generative workshop, participants will become miners digging for gold in the everyday details we so often ignore. Using visualisation and the act of remembering, we will write poems based on our daily lives, the objects and communities around us that nourish and sometimes frustrate us.
