Sarah Walker is a visual artist living and working on the Beara Peninsula, West Cork. She grew up in Dublin and studied Fine Art Painting at the National College of Art and Design. In 1991 she moved to live permanently in Beara and opened the Sarah Walker Gallery in 2000.

The Queen of Dirt Island is Donal Ryan’s soaring, jubilant story about four generations of women, fierce love, and the powerful stories that bind people together. The Aylward women of Nenagh, Tipperary, are mad about each other, but you wouldn’t always think it. You’d have to know them to know – despite what the neighbours might say about raised voices and dramatic scenes – that their house is a place of peace, filled with love, a refuge from the sadness and cruelty of the world. Their story begins at an end and ends at a beginning. It involves wives and widows, gunrunners and gougers, sinners and saints. It’s a story of terrible betrayals and fierce loyalties, of isolation and togetherness, of transgression, forgiveness, desire, and love. About all the things family can be and all the things it sometimes isn’t.

Take a guided tour of Lonehort Battery, which was operational during World War One, is the largest of seven gun batteries built on Bere Island by the British Admiralty. The battery is surrounded by a deep moat and still contains two 6″ coastal artillery guns.

Weaving together landscape, history, and the compelling mythology of a Donegal site known as ‘The Poison Glen’, here are poems of grit and burning, of wildness, grace and magic, of dreaming and compassion.

An exhibition by visual artist Mary Sullivan in collaboration with Bere Island Women Create.

Through the lens of quilt making, performance, written word, sound, and photography, the Bere Island women reflect on the hold that the island has over them.

Location: The Drill Hall (10 minute walk from Rerrin Village)   

Four Bere Island Artists come together to showcase their work. This exhibition will feature a variety of artwork inspired by Bere Island and its surroundings, including drawings, photographic images, sculptures, and quilting.

The pinhole workshop will explore the making of pinhole cameras, creating negative images and then producing a positive black and white photographic print. Some cameras will be available as well as the opportunity and details for participants to make their own cameras.

In this stimulating workshop you’ll be given a range of writing prompts to help get your creative juices flowing and improve your skills as a writer. Moving across all fictional genres, this course will provide ways to deepen imagination and craft, bringing fresh ideas and layers to your work, helping to take to it to the next level.

How to conjure mystery and magic in a poem? Join poet and editor Annemarie Ní Churreáin for a creative writing workshop aimed at poets writing across a range of subjects including landscape, history, family autobiography and the Otherworld. In a supportive and encouraging environment participants will learn to identify resonant themes and will gain insights into the dynamics at play in the making of a poem. Workshop activities will include creative writing prompts, close reading of work by established poets, and group discussion. No previous experience of poetry or of magic required. Poets at all levels of experience welcome!

Bere Island Arts Festival will be running an art competition for the children of Scoil Mhichíl Naofa. The children are asked to present work on what the island means to them through art and written word.
