Performance / Amanda Coogan

The Irish Times describe Amanda Coogan as ‘the leading practitioner of performance in the country’. Her work merges ritual, endurance, and cultural iconography into striking live actions. At Bere Island Arts Festival Coogan will present a durational performance that invites the unpredictable, where movement, silence, and chaos unfold in real time. Her practice centres on the live body as a site of meaning, resistance, and transformation. Raised with Irish Sign Language as her first language, Coogan draws from a unique gestural vocabulary. Known for bold, poetic works like headbanging to Beethoven’s Ode to Joy or signing Gil Scott-Heron’s The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, Coogan challenges expectations with humour, resilience, and intensity. Coogans Bere Island performance promises to be a powerful, embodied experience – one that lingers in memory long after the action ends.
