Film Screening with Q&A / Housewife of the Year

Location: The Lecture Theatre

€10 including booking fee

HOUSEWIFE OF THE YEAR tells the story of Ireland’s treatment of women through the prism of a unique, surreal, live televised competition, that has to be seen to be believed, where a generation of Irish women competed in front of a live audience for the title of ‘Housewife of the Year’. The former contestants share their direct experiences of marriage bars, lack of contraception, magdalene laundries, financial vulnerability, boredom and shame and of course, of being contestants in the competition. It is a poignant, often hilarious, uplifting story of a resilient generation of women and how they changed a country.

Official opening of culture night by Paula Meehan.

Join us for a memorable Culture Night celebrating Irish heritage through poetry, music, and dance. The night will start with the opening of culture night by renowned poet and member of Aosdána, Paula Meehan. Paula was born and raised in Dublin’s north inner city. Her award-winning poetry has garnered widespread popular and critical acclaim. Her poetry has been scored for choirs, for solo voice and made into songs by artists from diverse traditions — the folk, including the legendary Christy Moore, and the avant garde. Poems have been made into short films; have been danced; are studied at Leaving Certificate level and at home & abroad in schools, universities and other settings.

This will be followed by music by West Cork musicians Martin Kearney and Derry Kennedy. Dance the night away to all the old-time Irish favourites, which promises to be great fun. Tea, sandwiches and cakes will be served during the night as they did in days of old.
